Dental Hygiene

A healthy and happy smile starts with a daily oral health routine at home, but to catch any problems early on, you need to visit us every 6 months for a thorough dental cleaning and a full oral health exam. Just like with the other parts of your body, prevention is the best medicine!  And if your cleaned teeth still don’t look to your satisfaction, we offer a range of cosmetic care treatments to make your smile more confident in work and social situations.

Regular Cleanings and Exams

Our teeth work hard every day and need a checkup at least twice a year. Even if you try your best at home to keep your teeth and gums clean, some hard-to-reach areas can only be cleaned by us in the clinic, and many dental problems can only be diagnosed, and hopefully prevented, by regular visits to Ivory Dental.

To clean your teeth we will remove plaque and tartar (the leading causes of tooth decay and gum disease), including in areas hard to reach in your daily brushing. We will then polish your teeth to restore their white shine.

At the same visit we will perform a meticulous and in-depth preventive inspection of your teeth and gums to look for any symptoms of pending infections, tooth decay, gum disease or other threats to your dental health. As needed, we can take diagnostic X-rays to look inside your teeth and gums for any signs of trouble.

Only your regular visits every six months to Ivory Dental Clinic can help us discover issues that may develop into large problems later on.

Dental Home Care

Your dental care should not stop after you’ve left our office. The basis for good oral health  is a rather boring daily routine which cleans your mouth of food particles and plaque (a thin film with harmful bacteria that covers your teeth every day, and that may harden into tartar on your teeth). Plaque and tartar are the leading cause of tooth decay and gum disease (gingivitis). Your daily mouth hygiene routine should consist of the following:

  • brushing your teeth twice a day after your first and last meal of the day, preferably with an electric toothbrush using a fluoride toothpaste
  • flossing between all of your teeth daily to remove any food particles and plaque
  • limiting sugary and highly-processed food and drink whenever possible
  • rinsing your mouth vigorously with water after every meal and snack
  • using an alcohol-free mouthwash if directed by your dentist
  • avoiding smoking to prevent gum disease and tooth decay and limiting coffee, tea, and red wine to prevent tooth stains and discolouration

Even with the best of home dental care you should visit us approximately twice a year to have your teeth cleaned professionally, especially in hard to reach areas, and to have a thorough exam of your teeth and gums (and sometimes an X-ray) to check for any signs of developing dental problems.
